How to Make Money Online and Offline

1

Sell Your Creations On Etsy

Etsy is a great place to sell handmade or own-brand items. Etsy has gone from strength to strength in recent years and has a huge market share for people wanting physical or digital products or gifts. The beauty of Etsy is the simplicity of opening a store and a large number of engaged shoppers ready to buy from small, independent retailers. You can create a store, list items, and start selling in no time. Furthermore, Etsy has created a level playing field in terms of marketing, so even new stores can compete with the giants without needing to spend lots (or even anything) on advertising. We had to put this as our number one way to make money online because we know it works and we know how simple it is to start!

At Saveezy, we created our own store on Etsy to test this approach and we found it to be a great (and very low-cost) way to dip into the world of e-commerce, test potential products and learn about how to find your niche (i.e. what products you’re going to sell). We’ll write a whole post on our case study store, but our main takeaway is to just try it! Do some market research, open a store, list an item ($0.20), and slowly make improvements until you get your first sale – there’s no thrill like it! You can open your store here and see how you go.

Check out our Etsy case study article: Sell On Etsy: How We Made Our First $1000.

Ratings

Earnings Potential: Only limited by your capability to scale your production, delivery, and customer relations.

Skills Required: Limited computer skills are required. Just upload photos using your phone and brush up on how to rank high.

Upfront Effort: Perfecting your manufacturing, delivering packages, and getting a high-ranked listing can take some time. It’s worth expecting to just break even at the start to build a brand.

Cost of Starting: Depends on your product but it’s very cheap to create a store and start selling.

What you need to know

  • It may take a while to get your first sale so it’s with undercutting the competition with cheaper prices at the start or providing a USP (Unique Selling Point).
  • Providing excellent customer service to build up 5* reviews is the most important part at the start.
  • Etsy takes a variety of different fixed and varying costs which you should take into account.
  • Etsy will withhold your sale funds in the first 90 days for 7 days. This can be reduced sometimes if you provide a tracked delivery. This is to ensure you are fulfilling the orders properly, this may impact your initial cash flow which is important to keep in mind.

Minimum Requirements

  • The Etsy Help Center has great free advice on how to set up a store.
  • You’ll need to list only items which are suitable for Etsy, as described here.
  • You’ll need to be over 13 years old.
2

Flip New Products on Amazon

Become an Amazon Seller, download the Amazon Seller App, and start scanning potential items to sell. This is a great side hustle that we’ve done for many years and it becomes second nature to start scanning items whenever you see a bargain or reduction in a store. We have this method at number two on our list of to make money online because you can do it whenever you’re browsing the internet or browsing the shops. Surprisingly, could pay for your weekly shopping, while you’re shopping!

Our top tip is to visit a store that offers products at a reduced price (TK Maxx, Home Bargains, or even the reduced section in Supermarkets), scan any bargains on the Seller App and see what they could be sold for on Amazon. You need to take into account the cost of Amazon to store and ship the products (using Fulfilment By Amazon), but you just send the products to Amazon and when someone buys it, you’ll get paid.

Also, we like the method of typing “in-box” into Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree and seeing what we can grab at a cheap price. We once bought three in-box electric showers from a builder for £50 each, shipped them to Amazon and they sold in the next few days for £300 each. We’ll write a full blog post on this method soon.

Ratings

Earnings Potential: Your earnings are limited to products you can source and you may be charged for holding unsold products at Amazon.

Skills Required: Just scan products, work out if they’re profitable and post to Amazon.

Upfront Effort: It’s a little time-consuming finding the products and posting the products to amazon, but then they handle the rest

Cost of Starting: Start with low-cost items and work up to bigger job lots.

What you need to know

  • You’ll need to set up a Seller Account. It’s recommended to protect yourself by setting this up in a company name but it’s not a requirement.
  • Some items are prohibited to sell on the App.
  • Make sure you factor in postage and FBA fees when working out if you’ll make a profit.

Minimum Requirements

  • Smartphone for the app.
  • The ability to obtain non-prohibited items to sell and be able to post them to Amazon.
  • Read the Amazon Seller requirements carefully to not infringe on their requirements. It can be tricky to get your account reactivated if you set it up wrong.
3

Create Websites For Local Businesses

This is a great way to grow your marketing, business, and e-commerce skills (all the skills required to know how to make money online). We recently did this for a local business which we really thought had potential if marketed correctly. After noticing a personalized pet store on the high street, we stopped and got chatting about how their business was doing. After getting to know them and having a look online (they only had a crude Facebook Page), we reached out to them offering to make them a free website and develop a basic marketing strategy. We agreed they would front the cost of running the website but I would offer my time for free and take commissions on any extra income made compared to their average sales for that month.

This allowed us to develop our e-commerce website-building skills while using someone else’s money to pay for the running costs. We developed a Shopify store with some paid-for extras and ran some basic Facebook Ads. We quickly started to make over £1000 a month extra in sales a month which cost the client only £50 in website fees and £60 in advertising a month. The beauty of this approach is you grow with the business and you can take on many clients using the same website template, making it easy to plug new companies into your winning formula.

We could have used WooCommerce through WordPress as a website-building platform which would be cheaper but more involved to get started. We’d also recommend using GoDaddy for Domains and Hostinger for low-cost web hosting.

Ratings

Earnings Potential: You could charge for your time or via percentage commission if you’re confident.

Skills Required: You will need to learn the basics of creating a website, online marketing, and working with businesses.

Upfront Effort: You’ll need to be prepared to work hard for free to get your client onboard and impress them.

Cost of Starting: You may have to pay for the website services initially, but then you have control over their online presence.

What you need to know

  • It’s helpful to know how to create a website, buy domains, and run marketing campaigns. These can all be learned on the job or via online training, youtube videos, and books.
  • It helps to build a strong relationship with the shop. Being able to meet for a coffee to discuss plans is a great way to become part of the business.
  • Make sure you create a contract so you are compensated for your work. Don’t get trapped paying for a failing business, make sure they are fronting the costs.

Minimum Requirements

  • A decent laptop or computer to build the website (you’ll need this if you want to know how to make money online anyway!)
  • The ability to buy and host website domains
  • Knowledge of website creation.
4

Rent A Spare Room In Your Home

If you have the luxury of a spare room in your home, you can easily rent it out to supplement your monthly income. In the UK, this is called taking in a ‘lodger’ and you can earn up to £7,500 in lodger income a year and not have to pay any extra tax on it. This is called the ‘Rent a Room‘ scheme and is an initiative in the UK to help tackle the shortage of affordable homes. This approach is a mix of how to make online and at home because you’ll be required to market your room online and virtually select the correct potential candidates.

We have found great tenants on websites such as SpareRoom and OpenRent for taking on monthly paying tenants. It’s important to ensure any mortgage provider will allow the lodgers and inform your home insurance company. We’d recommend becoming part of a landlord association such as the NRLA to get advice, template agreements, and deposit protection. You could also find shorter-term tenants on Airbnb.

Ratings

Earnings Potential: The rental income will be location dependant but it could help take the strain off bills.

Skills Required: It’s worth understanding your rights and the regulations required as a person renting out a room.

Upfront Effort: Finding the right person to rent to is the most important thing to ensure a smooth living arrangement.

Cost of Starting: You’ll need to ensure your spare room is fit to live in and that you have the correct documentation in place.

What you need to know

  • Make sure you don’t rent to too many people, check your local council for regulations.
  • We recommend you rent to one or two lodgers as a maximum.
  • You’ll need to be living at the house as your main residence.
  • £7500 tax-free lodger income is available when you complete your self-assessment tax.
  • Get a lodger agreement signed and witnessed at the start of the tenancy and create a signed inventory of the items in your home.

Minimum Requirements

  • A legal room to rent out in your own home.
  • Insurance and Mortgage provider approval.
5

Sell Unwanted Items on Marketplaces

Common marketplaces include eBay, Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace, and Shpock. These are all great ways to start selling your own products (or just extra things you have around the house) at very low costs or for free cost. You’ll see plenty of people selling their homemade woodwork creations or hobby craft items on these marketplaces and it’s a great (free) place to see if your products can sell.

A great way to get most things for free is to buy your items in bulk at a low cost per item (perhaps on a Marketplace or Auction) and simply sell the surplus to make your money back while keeping one item.

We agree that this method of how to make money online won’t allow you to quit the day job, but it’s a fantastic way to declutter and free up some extra cash to invest in some of the other more scalable approaches on this list.

Ratings

Earnings Potential: You’re limited to what you have available to sell. You could resell marketplace finds for a profit.

Skills Required: Upload the listing and post or have them collect the item.

Upfront Effort: Minimal effort to list an item.

Cost of Starting: It’s free unless you want to boost your ad.

What you need to know

  • You can either post the product or better still have the buyer collect from your home.
  • Ensure the products you sell are safe and as described.
  • Make sure to keep your seller rating as high as possible.

Minimum Requirements

  • A smartphone to take pictures and post the listing.
  • You may need a printer to post the labels if your postal service doesn’t offer to print.
6

Delivery Driver

More and more people are choosing to shop online and have their purchases, groceries, or even documents delivered to them. Delivery firms are always looking to increase their capacity (especially in peak times around gifting seasons).

Amazon Flex is a popular way to earn extra income at a time to suit you. You can select 2-4 hour blocks throughout the day and earn up to £17 per hour, which is paid weekly. We completed the online application which took around 20 minutes in total to enter details, watch a series of short videos and take some ID photos. The background checks then take around a week and then you can start completing 2-4 assignments. Other delivery firms to consider are Evri, Getir, DPD, and UPS.

If you don’t have a motor vehicle, you could use a scooter or bike to deliver food for Uber Eats, Deliveroo, or Just Eat.

Ratings

Earnings Potential: Around £15 per hour.

Skills Required: Drivers License.

Upfront Effort: Simple background check via an app, approval 1 week after the 20-minute application.

Cost of Starting: Requires medium-sized vehicle, fuel, and commercial insurance.

What you need to know

  • Be sure to work out if your location and vehicle will allow you to make enough profit.
  • If you’re not in a city with a local warehouse nearby, you may be driving long distances for not enough pay.
  • It’s worth signing up and trying for yourself.

Minimum Requirements

  • You’ll need a means of transport. Some services require larger vehicles like a van, but you could start with a simple push bike.
  • Age 18 or 21+ subject to service
  • A smartphone will be required in most cases.
7

Dropshipping

Dropshipping has been a popular business model for many years now due to its low barrier of entry and high potential profit margins. The basic concept to start and build a successful dropshipping website is as followed:

1. Find a supplier who sells a product people want to buy (perhaps from AliExpress).
2. Create an online store (perhaps on Shopify, Woocommerce, or even TikTok).
3. Do online marketing of your product (perhaps Meta Ads) and receive orders.
4. Fulfil the order by having your supplier send the product directly to the customer.
5. Ensure the customer is satisfied and leaves a positive review.
6. Scale the business: build strong supplier relations, improve delivery times by holding stock in the countries you sell to, and take on employees (usually remote workers in cheaper parts of the world) to manage customer orders, advertising, website development, etc.

You must understand that this is a huge simplification, and the actual amount of work to build a successful dropshipping brand is endless. Many dropshippers fail due to unhappy customers, long delivery times, poor cashflow management (Paypal can hold your sales revenue for extended periods), and generally producing a poor sales funnel. The cost of advertising successfully on places like Facebook and Instagram have also increased dramatically, which has squeezed profits for some dropshippers with low margins.

However, if you wanted to get started with eCommerce, dropshipping isn’t a bad place to start, and if you’re able to break through the competition with a certain niche product, then the rewards will be life-changing.

Ratings

Earnings Potential: We’ve seen some crazy Shopify store numbers of $100,000’s in a single day.

Skills Required: You’ll be a one-man business for the start that needs to understand all aspects of the business (from marketing, customer relations, logistics, tax, etc.)

Upfront Effort: To be successful, you need to work hard and stick with it.

Cost of Starting: You don’t need an awful lot to start, it’s usual to use a credit card to help with cash flow.

8

Online Surveys

If you want a zero-risk way to make a little extra cash in your spare time, then completing online surveys may just be the simplest way. Now, you definitely won’t be making enough money to replace your income, but we’d recommend it to make free cash so you can invest it into other means of making money (e.g. a subscription, software, cost of listing your products, etc.)

This method of making cash has been around for many (many) years and you should try it out for yourself. Just be careful when giving out personal information and keep your expectations low (potentially making a few hundred pounds a year – some in cash and some in gift cards). Check out the “What you need to know” section for more advice.

A few reputable sites to consider:

Go Branded: One of the most popular sites for completing purely surveys.
– 100 points will earn you $1 to use at stores such as Paypal, Mastercard, Amazon, Apple Store, Nike, Tesco, Uber, PizzaExpress, etc.
– Your earnings depend on the surveys available (around 500 points per hour).
– You need 500 points minimum before you can convert your points.

Swagbucks: A good earner from surveys, watching videos, installing apps, web searching, and more.
– Withdraw as cash from PayPal or as vouchers (John Lewis, Mastercard, Amazon).
– Average earning of 100 SwagBucks (Points) per 15 minutes using surveys.
– 100 SwagBucks earn $1 (around £0.80 depending on the exchange rate).
– Earn more doing free trials or playing games (1500 SwagBucks).

Google Opinion Rewards: A very safe and simple place to earn cash for your opinions.
– Survey’s take less than a minute to complete.
– The number of surveys can be low, but the payout is high per time taken.
– Expect only a few pounds a month. If you use Google Products you’ll be more successful.

InboxPounds:
– Get £1 free when you sign up, you can withdraw via Paypal when you earn £20.
– Expect £5 per hour – less if you just stick to surveys (not recommended).
– It’s not our favorite site, but worth a try.

Ratings

Earnings Potential: It can be very low, it can be a few dollars per hour.

Skills Required: None, just answer basic questions.

Upfront Effort: Just sign up and start answering surveys.

Cost of Starting: It’s free and can be done through your smartphone.

What you need to know

  • Use a new email dedicated to surveys to separate the clutter from your personal life.
  • Use malware protection software and don’t over-share your personal details.
  • Only use a few high-earning, reputable sites to stay safe and save time.
  • Take advantage of the highest earning surveys first and claim free offers.
  • Complete your profile correctly to receive the relevant offers for you.

Minimum Requirements

  • The internet and a device to access it
  • Paypal usually helps with withdrawing cash
  • Just complete the site profile to have tailored surveys.

Be a Sales Copywriter for an Online Store

Online stores are constantly trying to improve their sales performance by improving their website pages, running sales, or trying new marketing angles. A way to earn money from these websites is to improve the copy (the words on the page) of their product landing pages. You can find freelance jobs like these on Fiverr, Upwork and 99designs; but the best way is to beat all the competition and go straight to the source.

Find a website to improve and to which you’re a potential customer, make the improvements, and send a sample piece to the company. If they like it (they usually like free content from another perspective), then you can negotiate writing more product pages copy on piece rate or per hour.

You could also ask for a percentage commission on any increase in revenue that your copy creates. The business can run a split test (AB Test) where 50% of traffic is run to the existing page and 50% is run to your new page.

Writing-based work is becoming more and more enticing due to the improvements in AI-Generated copy from sites such as Chat GPT. You can use AI to give you inspiration but using AI to create sales copy will more than likely perform worse than well-planned, handwritten copy which has incorporated a strategic marketing principle.

Ratings

Earnings Potential: You can make a good commission if you’re able to improve a business’s performance.

Skills Required: It’s beneficial to understand sales and e-commerce so you can provide successfully converting content.

Upfront Effort: You may need to accept a few rejections and make content that leads to nothing, but you’ll find the right client after some practice.

Cost of Starting: You just need some spare time and learning material can be found for free online.

What you need to know

  • Reading a few of the most up-to-date online marketing sales books or completing a course by a reputable marketing expert will give you enough knowledge to write copy that can outperform others.
  • Expect rejections and companies who aren’t interested.
  • Once you get your foot in the door, your reputation will grow and you’ll be recommended to other businesses.

Minimum Requirements

  • None really, just be a competent writer in a language and learn some marketing tactics to apply.
  • Roughly 58% of websites are written in English (with the next highest language being 5%). However, being able to translate websites into other languages will also be useful for businesses looking to branch into new markets.
10

Become a Content Writer

We live in a content fuelled world and businesses are always looking for more writers to provide content for their blogs and social media posts. They need this content to improve their SEO rank (move higher up on Google), reach more customers, and build a more reputable brand.

Brands will pay for content writing for many things including blog posts, podcast scripts, YouTube scripts, social media posts, survey ideas, research and more. The beauty of this strategy is you can write about things that interest you (which won’t feel like work!). A successful script or blog could generate the business large sums of money and some a willing to pay £100s or £1000s per piece of content.

We recommend writing a free post for businesses and sharing it with them to show you’re serious and have the relevant knowledge and skills. If they’re interested, they will ask for more content which you can negotiate the price for. Also, take advantage of AI-Generated content inspiration using Chat GPT or similar – NEVER just copy from AI as this will negatively affect your content’s ability to improve SEO.

Ratings

Earnings Potential: You can make a good commission if you’re able to improve a business’s performance.

Skills Required: If you can write, you can start.

Upfront Effort: Write about what you’re passionate about and get your content out there. It may take a little while until you get paid.

Cost of Starting: You just need some spare time and learning material can be found for free online.

11

Get Interviewed By Brands

Brands will pay a lot (typically around £60 per hour but can be over £200 per hour) for qualified candidates to take 1-on-1 interviews with them to answer more in-depth questions regarding their research projects. These can also be in the form of focus groups where you asked a series of questions as part of a group to aid the brand’s consumer research.

Some of the best interview sites in our opinion are Respondent.io, User Interviews, and TestingTime.

The tasks required are usually one of the following:

– Individual Interview
– Group Interview
– Individual User Testing
– Product Testing
– Product Review

Ratings

Earnings Potential: Offers high per-hour earnings, but there won’t always be enough interviews suitable for you.

Skills Required: Just be yourself and answer the questions honestly.

Upfront Effort: Just create a profile and take work as it comes.

Cost of Starting: Free to join, just need a device with a webcam & microphone.

What you need to know

  • Expect between £50-£60 per hour for typical studies.
  • Some studies may last longer (some 12 months) but will pay a lot more.
  • If you are a business expert in a certain field, try Respondent.io as they’ll pay lots for your professional experience.

Minimum Requirements

  • Laptop (or sometimes smartphone) with a camera and microphone. You’ll need this if you want to know how to make money online anyway!
  • Zoom is often the platform used.
  • Honest and Polite replies to questions
12

Start a Blog

Blogging is a great way to channel your creativity and earn commission from affiliates and advertisers. If you’re starting a blog to make money, be mindful that maintaining a blog and creating consistent content isn’t easy if your heart’s not in. Try to pick a topic that you’ll be excited to write about and that will keep you coming back.

The basic idea here is to:

– Post valuable information on your website
– Drive traffic to your website (social media, backlinks, SEO)
– Monetize your blog by adding Adverts (Google AdSense) and/or affiliate links.

We recommend using WordPress to start your website as it’s a powerful and cheap way to get into blogging. We also use Hostinger as it’s the cheapest way to get your blog live and look professional with its own domain name.

There are more ways to make money through blogs which we’ll get into in another post. However, if you’re starting out, it’s worth just trying to create valuable content and get visitors to your site first, the money will come later. It’s also helpful to try to choose blogging topics that high-paying advertisers may be interested in; some blogging topics will have a higher advertising ‘CPM’ (how much you get paid per 1000 impressions) than others. Think about which industries the companies with high advertising budgets are in.

Ratings

Earnings Potential: The large-traffic blogs can quite easily replace a full income and some. The beauty of a blog is that it can develop into a brand and be the base for multiple other streams of income.

Skills Required: You can start easily using a drag-and-drop page-building website platform (i.e. no coding required)

Upfront Effort: It’s a lot. Not to be underestimated, but it’s yours and you’ll love the process (and if you don’t, at least you’ll know you tried).

Cost of Starting: Hosting your website is around £3/m with Hostinger and you get a free domain name. The price will go up after a few years but hopefully, you’re monetized by then.

What you need to know

  • It’s competitive and tough to get your blog ranked in saturated markets
  • Consistency and giving value is the most important thing (give value to get returns).
  • You can use any blog-building website but being WordPress-capable opens up more opportunities if you wanted to build websites for others.

Minimum Requirements

  • A decent laptop or computer to build the website (you’ll need this if you want to know how to make money online anyway!)
  • Get started if you have the willpower, a computer, the internet, and little pocket money spare to buy any website plug-ins to speed up your development.
13

Rent Out Your Spare Storage Space

Rent is at an all-time high and more than ever people are having to downsize rather than upsize their living. People will pay to store their items in your property for a set period of time, this may be while their out for a few days or while they’re abroad for a few months.

We think this is a no-brainer for people with a spare room, loft space, garage, or even a shed. You can advertise your potential storage location and people will message you to arrange a drop-off. A loft space can earn around £60-£90 per month in my area of South West England.

The sites we recommend are StashBee (5% host fee) or Store Mates (16.5% host fee).

Ratings

Earnings Potential: £20-£120 per month depending on if you’re renting out a cupboard or whole garage space

Skills Required: None, just put up a listing and keep the items safe.

Upfront Effort: Just store the items and ensure you give them back in the same condition as you found them

Cost of Starting: It’s free to list your storage space but you’ll be charged a percentage (5-16%) to use the advertising platform.

What you need to know

  • Provide information and photographs of the space and you’re ready to go.
  • It’s recommended to use a hosting site for insurance, renter verification, and payment processing. However, you could simply go direct and advertise on Facebook or Gumtree.

Minimum Requirements

  • Sign up to the website using email.
  • Just have any kind of space to rent. We’ve seen people even renting out their fridge drawers.
14

Pet Sitting

More and more people are turning to local pet sitters over conventional kennels. This is due to a more flexible level of service and a more pleasant experience for your pet. We’ve recently found it difficult to find a good local kennel for our rescue dog which doesn’t leave our dog looking and smelling terrible after just a weekend stay.

We’ve used platforms such as Rover and TrustedHousesitters to find local pet sitters who are even located on our neighboring street. You can select from many local, rated sitters who offer different services such as:

– Boarding
– House Sitting
– Drop-in Visits
– Day Care
– Dog Walking

Ratings

Earnings Potential: People charge from £10 a walk to £50+ to stay for the night. If you take in a few pets you could make £100+ a day.

Skills Required: Most hosts have basic dog handling experience but if you’re unsure you can only take on certain-sized dogs.

Upfront Effort: This will depend on the dog, choose carefully.

Cost of Starting: Signing up is free and you’re charged 15% on any earnings. You can even house-sit for others and take advantage of saving some bills at home.

What you need to know

  • Create a trustworthy profile and ensure your house is safe if you are offering to have pets stay over.
  • Gain reviews and reputation early by offering cheap rates or extra services like more walks in great locations.

Minimum Requirements

  • Age restrictions of 18+ for most websites.
  • Follow the guidance and be respectful of the community
15

Rent Out Your Car

With working from home being more popular and traveling back on the cards, people’s cars are being left unused for extended periods. You can turn your car into a cash-producing asset by renting it out on websites like Karshare, Hiyacar, Turo, and Getaround.

Karshare says their customer earn up to £650 per month renting out their vehicles and you could too. You’ll just need a vehicle that meets their criteria and they’ll provide the rent (installing keyless entry, comprehensive insurance, driver behavior monitoring, fuel refund guarantee if the renter doesn’t replenish your fuel).

Ratings

Earnings Potential: Can be a great extra earner of £650+ a month depending on the make of vehicle and location.

Skills Required: None, just get the app and have a car that is suitable and modern (less than 13 years old and 100,000 miles)

Upfront Effort: Minimal effort, all done via an app to unlock the car.

Cost of Starting: You’ll need a car, but you already knew that.

What you need to know

  • Rent out for as little as a few hours and as long as you like.
  • Set your own rate and see how you get on.
  • The car share company arranges the insurance and takes between 10-30% commission.
  • Your car will have telematics monitoring and keyless entry systems fitted.

Minimum Requirements

Car requirements from Karshare:

  • Less than 13 years old
  • Less than 100,000 miles on the clock
  • Roadworthy (insured, taxed and have valid MOT)
  • Have a replacement value of not more than £50,000
  • Be in an insurance group of 1-34
  • Not be an import
  • Not have a CAT S or CAT N advisory
  • For our keyless technology to work, vehicles must either have a standard blade turn key ignition or proximity push button start. Keys that need to be inserted into the dashboard unfortunately aren’t compatible.

Video Thumbnail Designer

In the world of the lucrative world of YouTube, content creators need two main things in order to make their videos successful: 1) People need to click on their videos and 2) People need to watch their videos. Having an engaging and curiosity-building thumbnail to your video is often what separates the average YouTuber from the great YouTubers.

These content creators are happy to pay anywhere from £200 to upwards of £1000 per thumbnail if you can provide them with thumbnails that convert well (get a high CTR – Click Through Rate).

It’s important to get paid for your work, but to get your foot in the door with a creator, it’s often worthwhile creating a free sample thumbnail for one of their existing videos. They can then split test the thumbnail against their current thumbnail (50% of viewers see one thumbnail and 50% see the other), and a comparison of the CTR data will prove if you are worth investing in.

It’s worth being semi-competent in Photoshop but you could also use platforms like Canva to get started to get a feel for what works without committing too much time.

Ratings

Earnings Potential: You’re looking at around £100 per hour at the start if you’re able to get a happy client. This will improve when you have a template for the creator which reduces design time.

Skills Required: You may be competing with other graphic designers but just make sure you’re better than a YouTuber with no graphic design background.

Upfront Effort: You will need to learn what works by studying thumbnail trends and you may get turned away after offering free samples. You only need a few clients to make it worthwhile.

Cost of Starting: Photoshop is only £19.97 per month which you could make by doing surveys for a few hours.

What you need to know

  • Just get started by recreating thumbnails and sending a templated script to creators.
  • Follow up if you don’t hear back from them.
  • Even if you’re not successful, you’ll be learning photoshop skills which will be useful.
  • Make sure you agree on how you’ll be getting paid if they choose to use your services.
  • You could get paid per thumbnail (recommended) or based on the performance of the thumbnail.

Minimum Requirements

  • A decent laptop or computer to build the thumbnail (you’ll need this if you want to know how to make money online anyway!)

Sell Custom Clothes (Print On Demand)

This is an oldie but a goldie, but this side hustle withstands the test of time but people wear clothes and people love share their personality. The concept is simple:

– Create a website or use a Marketplace Platform to sell your clothes.
– Create designs or give the ability for users to create their own designs.
– Once an order is placed, the garment will be printed and delivered to the customer.

This way, you need to hold stock and risk wasting money on unsold goods. It’s basically old school dropshipping for clothing brands.

You could use Printful to print and fulfil orders made on an Etsy Store, or use Merch by Amazon which advertise, print and fulfil your orders (a complete service from top to bottom). Eventually, you can create your own custom website to save on 3rd Party fees, but then you’ll need to take care of advertising, fulfilment, customer service, taxes.. (the list goes on..)

Ratings

Earnings Potential: This tried and tested approach can be scaled into a high-earning business (or just some extra pocket money if you prefer to keep it small).

Skills Required: There’s not much to it, some graphic design skills may be useful to create a design people would buy. Amazon or Printful can fully automate the fulfillment process.

Upfront Effort: Creating the designs and excitement around them is the key to success. The clothing market has plenty of competition but people will support new brands if they bring in something new.

Cost of Starting: Since you print the clothes only when you make a purchase, there are very few upfront costs to front.

What you need to know

  • Create some hype on social media and use marketing tactics such as an exclusive, limited stock sale. People will value products more if it’s more exclusive.
  • Don’t be scared to sell your products at a premium. High-ticket products will give your brand a premium feel and your profit margins could be better.
  • You may also consider undercutting the market and being cheaper than competitors to win over customers.

Minimum Requirements

  • A decent laptop or computer to build the graphics (you’ll need this if you want to know how to make money online anyway!)
  • The designs shouldn’t violate the content policy on your sales platforms.
  • Your designs can’t infringe on anyone else’s intellectual property.
  • Try buying a sample of your product first so customers are happy with the quality.

Social Media Manager for Businesses

If you’re already a prolific poster or always up to date with the latest social trends, then you could put your skills to use and post for a business in need of more online presence. You could get creative and try to produce some viral content on TikTok or Instagram or post to build a more professional feeling image. You should try and understand the company’s goal to maximize their return on investment in your efforts. They could want to generate leads, promote a sale or just get their image out there.

It’s important to produce quality posts across a consistent time frame and analyze the results in terms of key metrics like impressions, engagement, CTR (click-through rate), and more. You can schedule posts to become active in the future, allowing you to do your work in batches which frees up your time for other things.

Ratings

Earnings Potential: It could be a full-time role within an organization if you become a valuable asset.

Skills Required: You may have plenty of social media practice already but there’s some skill involved in cracking the algorithms behind TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, etc.

Upfront Effort: You’ll need to find a company to trust you to take over their social media (which can be the face of the brand). Creating quality posts can take a while to master.

Cost of Starting: You only really need a smartphone or laptop and perhaps a graphic design platform like Canva or Photoshop.

What you need to know

  • Build up a portfolio of posts to help gain the trust of a company.
  • Do some unpaid work to get your foot in the door, perhaps remake some existing posts.
  • Make sure you have permission before you post to cover your back.

Minimum Requirements

  • A smartphone and a can-do attitude.
  • A decent laptop or computer will help in the future (you’ll need this if you want to know how to make money online anyway!)

Write an eBook

Self-publishing an eBook is a great way to quickly share and monetize your expertise. Since 2007, Amazon has provided Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) which has allowed anyone to become an author and sell their digital books through Amazon. A staggering 1.42 million (up to 2023) self-published titles have been released since then, making it a very popular choice for budding authors.

It’s very easy (almost too easy) to publish on Amazon KDP, but we advise you to make certain that your book is verified, proofread and validated before publishing. You generally have to get your manuscript ready, create a front cover image, create the structuring titles, chapters, and headings, upload it in the required format (EPUB is usually preferred to others to remove formatting errors), and then set your price.

There are other publishing platforms like BookBaby and Smashwords which you can also publish on. Amazon is a great place to start but be aware of the royalty earnings strategy when you set your price. The price strategy currently is as follows:

Book cost: $0.99 – $2.98 = You receive a 35% payout
Book cost: $2.99 – $9.99 = You receive a 70% payout
Book cost: $10 and up = You receive a 35% payout.

When starting out, don’t be afraid to sell at $0.99 to start making some sales and gaining valuable reviews. You can increase your price to the $2.99 option when the time is right.

Ratings

Earnings Potential: With the correct research and topic, self-publishing authors have made $100,000’s of passive income this way.

Skills Required: You need good writing skills, but with time, dedication, and some online writing apps, I believe anyone can write a solid performing book.

Upfront Effort: You’ve got to be prepared to put the time and effort in, but then it’s just marketing from there.

Cost of Starting: It’s free to publish eBooks on Amazon KDP, you just have the share the royalties on any sold copies.

Create an Online Learning Course

Since COVID-19, online learning has become the norm for students around the world. Post-pandemic, the trend has continued upward with more and more people choosing to take online eLearning programmes. People love the flexibility of learning at their own speed and being able to log in whenever and wherever they are. It’s also environmentally friendly and usually much more cost-effective. Not only can you learn online, but you can also publish your own courses using platforms like Skillshare, Udemy, and Teachable.

The main difference between eLearning platforms are:

1) Platforms that act as Marketplaces: Your course material will be available to an existing student population who are ready to learn. This makes it easier to find people who want to purchase your material and recommend if you have limited presence. These platforms are usually free to create material on but will take a commission on each sale.

For example, Udemy will charge 3% if the student uses the instructor’s referral link (i.e. they have driven their own traffic) or they will charge 63% if the student doesn’t use an instructor referral link (i.e. Udemy has driven the traffic).

2) Platforms that provide you with Course Creation Tools: These platforms provide you with the means to create a successful learning platform that can be linked to your landing page on your own website. This makes for a highly customizable user experience and works well if you’re able to drive your own traffic.

The platform Teachable charges $29/month for their basic paid plan which includes a custom URL domain, all the tools to create a great course, and email marketing systems, amongst others.

Ratings

Earnings Potential: You can make a lot of money selling courses online (relatively passively), with some instructors selling their courses for $1000’s.

Skills Required: You need some desirable knowledge to share and the ability to convert students into buying and positively engaging with your content.

Upfront Effort: It’ll be tough to get started, but if you’re already producing content or have the knowledge, you just need to package it up into digestible chunks.

Cost of Starting: It can be free if working on a marketplace or less than $1 per day for the software (basic plan).

Rent Out Your Personal Items

In the cost of the living crisis we’re facing, people have less disposable income to buy the things they need upfront. Often, renting something works out a lot cheaper if you don’t need to use it regularly. Someone may need music equipment for an event or a camera for a one-off filming shoot, if you have these valuable items, people will rent them from you.

Websites like Fat Llama allow you to list your items to be rented for the day and you can expect £50 per day for DJ Decks or £300 per day for a full music studio. Other popular items include Sewing Machines, Vehicles, Drones, Scooters, Projectors, and general electrical items. People also offer their services such as a camera with a film director and editor.

Your items will be insured up to £25,000 and each of the borrowers is verified before they can use the service. You and the borrower will be charged 25% for the service.

Ratings

Earnings Potential: Depending on what you have and your location, you could make a few extra £100’s a month which could go a long way.

Skills Required: You can lend out your items or your services

Upfront Effort: Just list an item and have them collect it from you, or offer delivery.

Cost of Starting: It’s free to use, Fat Llama charges you and the borrower 25%.

Do Voicework

Whether it’s narrating audiobooks, presenting podcast openings, or voice acting in a commercial, there are plenty of ways to monetize your voice. You might have a cheery, interesting, or trustworthy voice that people are willing to pay for.

Websites such as Voices, Voquent, and ACX are great dedicated voice work websites where you can show off your voice and get work for clients. You could also try general freelance websites like Fiverr and Upwork which are popular ways to get voice-over gigs.

You will need good audio equipment to compete with other actors and secure work. Voices have an article with a breakdown of a beginner ($2329) and professional ($27,797) home audio studio. However, if you’ve got a reasonably modern laptop, headphones, and a good microphone ($100-$200 secondhand USB microphone) we think you can dip your toes into the industry and see if you like it. Audacity is a great, free, open-source audio editing tool you can download today.

Ratings

Earnings Potential: You can turn into your full-time work if you have the voice for it and develop the audio mixing skills

Skills Required: You’ll need to learn the ropes of basic audio engineering on editing software.

Upfront Effort: It’s going to take some effort to compete with the guys already crushing it but if you have the passion for it you’ll get there.

Cost of Starting: It can be very expensive to get the latest and greatest equipment. But there are free and secondhand tools out there.

Be a Website or App Tester

Website or app developers need their target audience to be able to use and enjoy their online products. The thing is, website or app developers aren’t always the target audience, and therefore they need a range of people to voice their opinion before the website or app is launched.

Websites such as UserTesting, UTest, and Enroll will pay you for your user experience. This can be done through a series of questions or via a screen recording of you discussing your experience. You may need a microphone and webcam but you won’t need anything fancy to get started (earphones and a built-in laptop camera).

You’re looking at around $10 for 10-20 minutes of your time. The issue is, you probably won’t be able to find enough tests to complete to make significant cash, but it’s great cash for the time spent if you’re able to find a few a month. UTest will pay significantly more, but you’ll be required to find bugs in code that may be beyond most of our capabilities.

Ratings

Earnings Potential: It depends on your ability to find tests and if you’re able to debug code.

Skills Required: Most tests are looking for normal people with normal skills

Upfront Effort: You may want to go the extra mile to become a quality tester.

Cost of Starting: If you have a laptop you should be good to go.
